Many of these arguments are twisting different behaviors and lumping them into the same groups. This will never lead to any valid arguments on either side. For example, scamming is different than suicide ganking is different than can flipping is different than... While most will be categorized as anti-social behavior, the motivations for all are different and should be credited as such if we are having an argument about the underlying reasons behind said behaviors.
People who have babies in the background can't be bad people. Try and figure that one out.
However, I digress. Let us have a discussion about the future of Eve and how this moral argument impacts it. This is going to scare a lot of people. I'll try and keep it short and sweet.
The devs have stated repeatedly, that the inception of Incarna and all the steps that have been taken up until this point, and those that will come in the future are made in the hope that Eve will attract more players. Not just new players but new types of players.
Just in the four years I have been playing I have already seen a marked increase in the number of players who are just plain sick of the griefing. These people are not impressed by chest thumping, "tear collecting," misanthropic forum superstars. They just want to log in and play their game in peace. These people think non-consensual pvp is wrong and should be limited. I am not here to argue whether they are right or wrong, I am just pointing out that there are more of them now than ever before.
In my opinion this is a direct result of the game opening itself up to a larger player base and remember, this is before captains quarters, ambulation, the myriad of other changes that are forthcoming that are, by the devs own words, intended to open the game up even more to a larger base of players.
It would seem to me that if CCP really intends to cater to a larger audience then many griefing issues will have to be addressed if there is any hope of retaining these newer (probably more casual) gamers. The current game is too predatory toward newer players. Again, I am not arguing the merits of this predation. I am conflicted in my feelings for it. It made me a stronger player but I am not the average, casual gamer and I think we all can agree the new player experience is at best, unfriendly.
Personally, I feel like it is way to easy for a player like me to destroy the hopes and dreams of new account holders. I am not a griefer by any means, in fact, I've never shot a player that didn't shoot at me first and I've never taken anything that didn't belong to me but with the time I have invested and my skillset, the option is always there for me and I'm not sure that is very conducive to an environment that welcomes new players.
I am enjoying very much, observing this change as it slowly occurs. The reactions of some of the more hostile players as they desperately try and hold on to the old way of doing things is sweeter than any tears ever collected in any suicide gank.
Face it gents, the demographic is changing. The game will either change with it or it will remain a niche game (not saying this is a bad thing) that never fully realizes its subscriber potential. I will continue to play and continue to be a benefit to the game and to the people I play with either way.
Just some food for thought.
nonconsensual pvp is punished in hisec if you're in lowsec then its consensual pvp and you will be killed
